When New Hanover Count Sheriff Sid Causey announced his intention to retire from office before the end of his term, the job of recommending a successor became the responsibility of the New Hanover County Democratic Party Executive Commiteee. On April 30, about 80 members of the Executive Commitee voted to name Chief Deputy Ed McHahon as the next sheriff. On July 1, Ed McMahon was sworn in as the new sheriff.
